The Seals began play in the WHL as the San Francisco Seals in 1961. The team moved to Oakland for the 1966-67 season. While in Oakland, the team was sold to an investor group including Whitey Ford and Pat Summerall. When the group could not make make payments, Oakland A's owner Charles O.
