The Pittsburgh Crawfords were named by team owner Gus Greenlee, who also owned the Crawford Grill, a popular nightclub in Pittsburgh. The Crawfords are recognized as one of the greatest teams of it's era, playing in both the Negro National League and Negro American Leagues. As a result of the team's success, the team owned it's own stadium Greenlee Field.  In 1937, following back to back championships, many of the team's star players including 3 future hall of famers left to play in the Dominican Republic. The team never recovered and after declining attendance the team moved twice and finally folded in 1940.
