The Jacksonville Sharks were charter members of the World Football League (WFL). They hosted the league’s first nationally televised game on July 10, 1974 before nearly 60,000 fans in the Gator Bowl. The team was owned by Fran Monaco, who owned a string of successful medical labs in Florida. A massive football fan who had been to every Super Bowl up to that time. His dream of owning a pro football team soon became a nightmare, however, as the team struggled on the field and at the gate, despite the huge opening night crowd. Swimming in a sea of red ink, the team was taken over by the league. Unable to find a new owner, the league folded the Sharks. Monaco would up losing his medical lab business and wound up bankrupt.
