San Diego Conquistadors/Sails T-Shirt
Years Active: Conquistadors 1972-1975, Sails 1975
Stadiums: Peterson Gym, Golden Hall, San Diego Sports Arena
The Conquistadors were the first and only expansion team in the ABA. The team had constant feuds beginning in the first season when a dispute with the stadium manager prevented the team from playing in the San Diego Sports Arena. Despite having to play at small courts around the city, hall of famer KC Jones coached the team to the playoffs in its first season. The following year, the team signed Wilt Chamberlain as a player-coach, but the Lakers sued to prevent Chamblerlain from playing in games. With Chamblerlain only serving as a coach, fans lost interest in the team. The team changed its name to the Sails in 1975, but was informed it would not be included in the ABA-NBA merger with the rumored cause being their feud with the Lakers. As a result, the Sails folded early in the season rather than continue.
