Years Active: Surge 1991-1992, Gold Miners 1993-1994
Stadium: Hughes Stadium, Hornet Stadium
Titles: 1992 (World Bowl)
The Sacramento Surge began play in the World League of American Football. Kay Stephenson served as head coach while Jack Youngblood was in charge of special projects and worked as a broadcaster along with Ronnie Lott and long time 49ers announcer Joe Starkey. The Surge won a championship in their second season, but the league was suspended soon after.
The Surge became the Gold Miners in 1993 and joined the CFL, becoming the first US based team in the league. After 2 seasons, the team moved to San Antonio when Hornet Stadium proved to be unsuitable and Sacramento's distance from the rest of the league made traveling difficult.
