Pittsburgh Pipers Jersey
Years Active: 1967-1970 (Pipers), 1970-1972 (Condors)
Stadiums: Pittsburgh Civic Arena, Met Center
The Pipers began play in Pittsburgh in 1968 and were off to a fast start as Connie Hawkins led them to win the first ABA championship. Despite the championship and solid attendance, the team moved to Minneapolis the following year. With poor attendance in its only season in Minnesota, the Pipers again moved back to Pittsburgh. This time however, fan support was not the same as fans felt abandoned by the team. The Pipers were renamed the Condors in 1970 in an attempt to regain fans. The team became desperate and even had a promotion where all tickets were given away for free. The final nail in the coffin was an exhibition with the Milwaukee Bucks. The game was promoted as an opportunity to see Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, however he was injured a few days prior. With Kareem out, the promotion flopped in what would be the final season.
In its short history, the Pipers featured two hall of fame coaches in Vern Mikkelsen and Buddy Jeannette.
