The Oakland Oaks along with their crossbay rivals the San Francisco Seals, were the first professional baseball teams in the Bay Area when they started the 1903 season. The Oaks were often called the Acorns which was their mascot. As the league grew to a near major league level in the 1940's, the Oaks were able to acquire top talent. This was never more true than the 1948 team nicknamed the "nine old men" consisting of mostly former major league players. In 1946, hall of fame manager Casey Stengel was hired and began platooning players based on matchups. His success with the Oaks landed him a job as manager of the Yankees where he popularized the platoon system.
