The New Orleans Pelicans began play in the late 1800's and played on and off until 1901 when they joined the Southern Association. The team won 3 league championships, all consecutively from 1932-1934. In 1933 and 1934, the Pelicans also went on to win the Dixie Series against the champions of the Texas League. The team was sold and moved in 1960 shortly before the league itself folded. In 1977, a new unrelated team took the Pelicans name and played one season in the Superdome. Today the Pelicans name lives on as an NBA team.
