Racers WHA Hall of Fame Shirt
Team Info
The Indianapolis Racers began play in 1974 at Market Square Arena. The team was known for its great fans and at its peak led the league in attendance in 1976. Jacques Demers coached the team for two seasons, resulting in playoff appearances both years. Things started to fall apart when owner Nelson Skalbania became concerned with merging the Racers into the NHL. He unsuccessfully attempted to move the team to Canada and later signed players to huge contracts the team could not afford. Most notably he signed a 17 year old Wayne Gretzky to one of the largest hockey contracts in history. The team folded 25 games into the 1978-79 season due to financial problems and most of its assets were sold to the Edmonton Oilers.
