    Team: Carolina Cougars
    Years Active: 1969-1974
Homes: Greensboro Coliseum (Greensboro, NC), Charlotte Coliseum (Charlotte, NC), Dorton Arena (Raleigh, NC)

The Carolina Cougars were originally born as the Houston Mavericks, a charter member of the ABA. Tom Meschery coached the team in 1971 and after retiring as a player, Larry Brown took over the following season. The Cougars were touted as a "regional" team, playing home games in three cities: Greensboro, Charlotte and Raleigh. Game 7 of the Eastern Division Finals was played in Charlotte instead of Greensboro where the team won games 2 and 5. Following the loss, many questioned the decision and the team never made another deep playoff run.

    Notable Players:

    • Billy Cunningham
    • Larry Brown
    • Joe Caldwell
    • Mack Calvin
