Birmingham Americans/Vulcans Jersey
Team Info
The Birmingham Americans played in the World Football League in 1974. In a strange move, the team drafted retired hall of fame basketball player Richie Guerin who never played. The team signed Ken Stabler, Ron Jesse, Jethro Pugh, Rayfield Wright and LC Greenwood from the NFL. None of these players could play in 1974 as they were required to finish their NFL contracts, but the team paid them anyways. This reckless spending led to huge financial problems, but the Americans went on to win the only World Bowl ever played. Immediately following the game, team property was seized on site due to the debts. The team folded and a new team, the Birmingham Vulcans, were established the following season. The Vulcans kept the same uniforms and most of the same players. They had the best record in the league when the WFL folded midway through the 1975 season. The Vulcans attempted to join the NFL, but were unsuccessful.
