Before the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL), there were the Houston Texans of the World Football League (WFL). The WFL Texans were charter members of that rebel football league and were established in 1974. They shared the Astrodome with the NFL Oilers but struggled mightily. The Texans home games had no field goals, as the Oilers owned the goalposts, not the Astrodome. The team attempted to sign legendary player John Matuzak, who was involved in a contract dispute, away from the Oilers. Matuzak suited up and started a game for the Texans, but after one play was served with a cease and desist order on the sidelines. After the team’s eleventh game, they moved to Shreveport, Louisiana and became the Steamer.

In their new hometown, the team fared better, at least at the ticket window, as fans embraced the team. The Steamer, played their home games at the State Fair Grounds Stadium and returned for the 1975 season, but folded along with rest of the league in October of that year, barely halfway through the league’s second season.
