The Kansas City Monarchs were the longest running team in the Negro Leagues, playing at the major league level throughout their existence. The team was founded by JL Wilkinson who would later be elected into the hall of fame. The Monarchs were one of the most successful teams of all time, winning 12 titles and only one season with a losing record in 45 years. Ahead of their time, the Monarchs had a minor league affiliate and are credited with being the first baseball team to hold night games when they brought a portable lighting system to games beginning in 1930. In the final years, the team was sold and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where they continued to play as the "Kansas City Monarchs".
