The Birmingham Black Barons played in various leagues during their 40 years in existence. Originally playing at the minor league level, the Black Barons were named after the white minor league team (Birmingham Barons) that shared Rickwood Field. In 1924, the Black Barons made the jump to the major league level and began to draw larger crowds than their white counterparts. The Black Barons would go on to win 3 league titles at the major league level, however lost all 3 Negro World Series appearances to the Homestead Grays. Following the integration of baseball in 1947, the team began to lose major league talent and played its final game in 1960.
