Team Info

Years Active: 1972-1980

Stadium: Omni Coliseum

The Atlanta Flames were announced as an expansion team in 1971, in part to prevent the WHA from establishing a team there. Cliff Fletcher served as GM and the team's first head coach was Bernie Geoffrion. During the regular season, the Flames were successful making the playoffs in 6 of its 8 seasons. However, the team was never able to win a playoff series and fans became frustrated. These frustrations combined with a poor stadium led to a steady decline in attendance and financial problems for the team. Following the 1979-80 season the team was sold, relocated and rebranded.
