The Portland Storm were charter members of the World Football League (WFL), which kicked off in 1974. They played their home games at Civic Stadium. Former NFL All-Pro Ron Mix was the team’s general manager. The team struggled from the start, both on the field and at the gate. Looking to move or sell the team, owner Robert Harris convinced the Detroit Wheels to host their Week 9 match-up in his hometown of  London, Ontario. The game drew 5,000 fans. Harris folded the team after the season. 

In 1975, a new ownership group formed the Portland Thunder. That teamed had about the same level of success on the field, that is to say not much, while drawing half as many fans as their predecessors. The Thunder went out of business with the rest of the WFL on October 22, 1975.
