The Whalers joined the WHA as one of the league's original teams and were known as the New England Whalers. The team won the inaugural Avco Cup in it's first season which would end up being the only championship in team history. The team moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1974 and continued to be one of the most successful teams in the WHA, never missing the playoffs. Low attendance and the inability to get a new stadium built led to the Whalers demise. In 1997, the team was re-branded and moved
